In memoriam Fred Singer

September 27, 1924-April 6, 2020

Version française, en bas de page

Fred was very special, as kind as he was brilliant.

Having earned a PhD in Physics from Princeton University, Fred had an encyclopedic acknowledge of people, facts, institutions, and science. Before his academic career at University of Maryland, then Miami and Virginia, Fred worked with Marines to develop mines during war WWII. Later, he was with the US Embassy in London to develop Research Programs in Europe. He took top positions at EPA and the US Ministry of Transport, advised many energy and climate related Commissions for the Government, the Senate and the House of Representatives. He has been one of the pioneers at NASA for developing satellite observation of the Earth and its Climate.

Since 1990, Fred was the president of SEPP (Science & Environmental Policy Project), a leading climato-realist think tank and became in 2019 its honorary President. Fred is the author or editor of several books, published more than 200 peer review papers, attended many major conferences on climate change where his talent as a passionate and convincing speaker and debater has always been praised.  He was also a regular columnist for The American Thinker and major mainstream US media, denouncing the  UN’s corruption of climate science. What a fighter!

I had the privilege to meet Fred in 2012, and since then we remained in regular contact. As a member of the Board of SEII (the European Society for Engineers and Industrialists), I was running at that time a think tank on critical thinking. It was the time of the Climategate scandal involving Michael “Hockey Stick” Mann. We decided at SEII to focus on climate science, and to cross check the IPCC story overflowing the mainstream media. Thanks to Lars Mirren and his wife Ann, we came in contact with Fred and invited him to give a talk at the University Foundation in Brussels. One of the IPCC Vice-presidents at that time, the Belgian J.P. van Ypersele, who is also incidentally the nephew of the chief of staff of the (previous) King of Belgium (which explains his local lobbying power), forced a veto from SEII and from the University Foundation (of which the president was also the president of WWF Belgium) that was supposed to host our meeting.

This had a quadruple consequence. 1- I resigned from the Board of SEII, because of an unacceptable breach to the Freedom of Speech (a decision which received a large echo on the web, at that time). 2- I became a climato-realist, focusing on the flaws in IPCC models and the way they handle data mining and consolidation. 3- With the help of Claes Johnson , who was another speaker we invited for this meeting, and the logistic support of Lars Myren and his wife Ann, we held a “private meeting” that has been podcasted, and seen by thousands of people. 4- the just created informal climato-realist group published, under the direction of the late Istvan Marko, “15 vérités qui dérangent” (Texquis, 2013), sold at thousands of exemplars.

Thank you, Fred, for having opened my eyes and injecting me the fighting spirit that characterized you.

« Definitively, we are winning with fighters that follow you.  The climate liars have no chance » (M. Moreno)

My condolences to Fred’s family and all my respects go to a highly regarded and respected Man of Science and a life well lived.

You will be sorely missed Fred!

Rest in peace Fred.

Repose en paix Fred, tu l’as mérité.
